Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system, a staple of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to read and write messages.
The asynchronous messaging system, a key element of player engagement in previous FromSoftware titles, allows players to leave helpful (or misleading!) messages for others. However, this feature is deemed incompatible with Nightreign's intended shorter, more intense gameplay experience.
Preserving Asynchronous Elements
While the messaging system is absent, other asynchronous features will return and be enhanced. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will be significantly improved, allowing players to not only witness how others perished but also loot their spectral remains. This reinforces the game's focus on a more streamlined and action-packed experience.
A "Compressed" RPG Experience
FromSoftware aims to create a "compressed RPG" with Nightreign, prioritizing consistent intensity and multiplayer interaction. The game's three-day structure directly supports this goal, minimizing downtime and maximizing variety. This design philosophy underpins the removal of the messaging system, contributing to a more focused and rapid gameplay loop.
Nightreign, revealed at The Game Awards 2024, is targeting a 2025 release, though a precise date remains unannounced.
