Baldur's Gate 3 Publisher Calls for BioWare Overhaul

Recent layoffs at BioWare, the creators of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, have sparked widespread conversation about the current state of the gaming industry. Larian Studios' publishing director, Michael Daus, has again taken to social media to address these industry-wide layoffs. He argues for a greater appreciation of employees and emphasizes that responsibility for such actions should fall on decision-makers, not rank-and-file workers.

Daus contends that laying off large portions of development teams between or after projects is avoidable. He stresses the critical importance of retaining institutional knowledge for future projects. While acknowledging the financial pressures that sometimes lead companies to justify layoffs as "trimming the fat" (reducing redundancies), he questions the necessity of such aggressive cost-cutting measures in large corporations. He points out that this strategy might be understandable for consistently successful studios, but it's clearly not a sustainable solution for most. Layoffs, he argues, are simply the most drastic form of cost-cutting.

Daus ultimately places the blame squarely on the strategic decisions made by upper management, highlighting the disproportionate impact on lower-level employees. He uses the analogy of a pirate ship, where the captain would be the first to be thrown overboard in times of crisis, suggesting that video game companies should adopt a similar approach to accountability.
