The much-anticipated sequel to the 2020 action-adventure hit, Ghost of Tsushima, titled Ghost of Yotei, is set to address one of the major criticisms of its predecessor: the repetitive nature of its open-world gameplay. Developer Sucker Punch has committed to enhancing the player experience by introducing more varied and engaging gameplay elements.
Ghost of Yotei Promises Players The “Freedom to Explore”
Ghost of Tsushima Fans Heavily Criticize The Title for Being Repetitive

In a revealing interview with the New York Times, Sony and Sucker Punch unveiled their vision for Ghost of Yotei, which follows the journey of a new protagonist, Atsu. Creative director Jason Connell emphasized the team's efforts to combat the repetitive gameplay that plagued Ghost of Tsushima.
"One challenge that comes with making an open-world game is the repetitive nature of doing the same thing over and over," Connell explained. "We wanted to balance against that and find unique experiences." Ghost of Yotei aims to offer a fresh experience by allowing players to master firearms alongside traditional melee weapons like the katana, a significant departure from the original game.
Despite Ghost of Tsushima's strong 83/100 Metacritic rating, it faced criticism for its gameplay. Reviews on the site described it as a "competent but shallow and overfamiliar attempt to replicate Assassin’s Creed style open world adventure in the world of 13th century samurai," with suggestions that a "smaller scope or a more linear structure" could have improved the game.

Echoing the sentiment, fans have also noted the repetitiveness of Ghost of Tsushima, which detracts from its otherwise breathtaking visual and narrative experience. A player remarked, "Ghost of Tsushima is beautiful, but insanely repetitive and dull. The problem is that it all gets repetitive very quickly. There are only 5 enemies the entire game. There's sword guy, sword and shield guy, spear guy, big guy, and archer."
Sucker Punch is keen to prevent the same criticism from affecting Ghost of Yotei, aiming to enhance the cinematic flair and stunning visuals that define the series. Creative director Nate Fox highlighted the core essence of a Ghost game, stating, "When we started working on a sequel, the first question we asked ourselves is ‘What is the DNA of a Ghost game?’ It is about transporting the player to the romance and beauty of feudal Japan."
Announced at the State of Play September 2024, Ghost of Yotei is slated for release in 2025 on the PS5. The game promises to offer players the "freedom to explore" the scenic beauty of Mount Yotei at their "own pace," according to Sucker Punch Sr Communications Manager Andrew Goldfarb in a recent PlayStation blog post.
