Monster Hunter Wilds PC Performance: A Disaster

Capcom's latest release has surged to the 6th spot on Steam's most-played titles list, yet it faces heavy criticism from the gaming community due to its substandard technical performance. Digital Foundry's in-depth analysis of the PC version has shed light on the game's numerous issues, corroborating user feedback and leading to disappointing conclusions.

One of the most glaring problems is the lengthy shader pre-compilation process. On a system equipped with a 9800X3D processor, this can take approximately 9 minutes, while on a Ryzen 3600, it extends to over 30 minutes. Additionally, the texture quality falls short of expectations, even when set to "High." When running on a PC with an RTX 4060 at 1440p resolution and "High" settings with balanced DLSS, significant frame time spikes are evident. Similarly, the more robust RTX 4070 with 12 GB of memory still suffers from extremely poor texture quality.

For users with GPUs equipped with 8 GB of memory, Digital Foundry recommends reducing the texture quality to "Medium" to help mitigate stuttering and frame time spikes. However, this adjustment still results in unsatisfactory visual quality. Rapid camera movements continue to induce noticeable spikes, though these are less severe with slower movements. Even with lower texture settings, the frame time issues persist.

Alex Battaglia of Digital Foundry points to data streaming as the core issue, which places an excessive burden on the GPU during decompression. This is particularly detrimental for budget graphics cards, causing sharp frame time spikes. He advises against purchasing the game for those with 8 GB GPUs and expresses reservations about its performance on even more powerful setups like the RTX 4070.

The game's performance is particularly dire on Intel GPUs. The Arc 770, for instance, struggles to deliver 15–20 frames per second and is plagued by missing textures and visual artifacts. While high-performance systems can somewhat alleviate these problems, the game remains far from smooth. Currently, finding optimized settings is nearly impossible without sacrificing significant visual quality.
