The goal of the shooter's development is to make DOOM: The Dark Ages as widely available as possible. Compared to earlier id Software projects, this latest installment will offer significantly more customization options. Executive Producer Marty Stratton emphasized the studio's aim to make the game accessible to a broad audience.

Players will have the ability to adjust various gameplay elements, including enemy difficulty and damage, projectile speed, the amount of damage they take, as well as the game's tempo, aggression level, and parry timing. These customization options are designed to cater to different play styles and skill levels.

Stratton also assured fans that the storylines of DOOM: The Dark Ages and DOOM: Eternal can be fully appreciated without having played DOOM: The Dark Ages, making the narrative accessible to newcomers and seasoned players alike.
