Unfrozen Studio, the creators of Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, have unveiled further details about the intriguing Swarm faction, following its initial teaser. The team delved into the faction's origins, tracing its evolution from the initially conceived "Inferno" to the final, chillingly unique "Swarm," and the unfolding narrative within the world of Jadame.
The Swarm's defining characteristic is its remarkable adaptability. Certain creatures possess abilities directly influenced by the strength of their opponents; the greater the disparity, the more devastating the attack. Others, like the mantises, boast tactical flexibility, choosing from three distinct abilities each round. A particularly gruesome, yet effective, strategy involves creatures like worms and locusts consuming corpses to heal and bolster their power – a skill even heroes can learn.
In Olden Era, the insectoid Swarm assumes the mantle of the demonic threat, a race only briefly alluded to in Might & Magic 8. While respecting established lore, the developers have infused the Swarm with elements of body horror and occultism, transforming them from a mere insect colony into a terrifying cult, utterly devoted to a single, unseen overlord. Each member is a node within a vast, collective consciousness, existing solely to execute its master's commands.
Gameplay revolves around the Swarm's "mono-faction" mechanic. Utilizing only Swarm units maximizes their synergistic potential, granting significant advantages. Furthermore, Swarm troops can summon cocoons, their health directly tied to the army's overall size. These cocoons hatch into temporary larval units, providing dynamic battlefield adaptation.
The Swarm's playstyle emphasizes aggressive, direct confrontation. The ability of its creatures to consume corpses for healing and enhancement, coupled with unique abilities that shift based on enemy strength, makes for a refreshingly strategic and brutal combat experience.
