The developers and publishers behind Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have firmly stated that they are not aiming to convert the game into a "full live service" model, following a backlash from the community regarding events that were perceived as promoting "FOMO," or the fear of missing out. FOMO is a tactic commonly employed by live service game developers to spur immediate engagement and expenditure on time-limited virtual items, suggesting that missing the opportunity to acquire these items would result in a permanent loss.
This approach is often criticized for fostering an unhealthy dynamic between games and their communities. In 2021, research commissioned by the UK’s GambleAware charity highlighted how many games use psychological tactics, such as FOMO, to encourage the purchase of loot boxes. While Space Marine 2 does not feature loot boxes, it introduced community events aimed at unlocking exclusive cosmetics, which have sparked controversy and led some to label the game as a live service.
In response to the feedback, Space Marine 2's publisher, Focus Entertainment, and developer, Saber Interactive, acknowledged the "cold feedback" received about the community events. They reassured the community that the items available during these events would be accessible to everyone at a later date, emphasizing that the events were intended to allow dedicated players early access to cosmetics without causing frustration or stress.
The companies also apologized for any inconvenience caused by the current system and are working on simplifying the process to unlock items. To show their commitment to improving the player experience, Focus Entertainment is offering the emblem-less Mk VIII Errant Helmet for free to all players who link their PROS account to Space Marine 2. This helmet was part of the Imperial Vigil community event, which ends on March 3 and was previously only obtainable by achieving victories with each of six classes in Operations Mode before the deadline.
As Space Marine 2 players await the upcoming 7.0 update, which promises to introduce a new weapon, a new Operations map, and PvE Prestige Ranks, Focus and Saber have been addressing the community's concerns about content updates. Despite these challenges, Space Marine 2 achieved a record-breaking launch, selling 5 million copies and becoming the fastest-selling Warhammer video game to date.
