S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Release Slowed Ukrainian Internet Because It Was So Popular

The highly anticipated survival horror shooter, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, achieved such immense popularity in Ukraine that it overwhelmed the nation's internet infrastructure. This article delves into the game's launch day impact and the developers' reaction.

A Nationwide Internet Slowdown

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Release Slowed Ukrainian Internet Because It Was So Popular

The simultaneous downloads by thousands of Ukrainian gamers on November 20th, the game's release date, caused significant internet slowdowns. Major internet providers, Tenet and Triolan, confirmed the issue on their Telegram channels, attributing the reduced speeds to the massive influx of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 downloads. Triolan's statement, as reported by ITC, highlighted the "increased load on the channels" as the primary cause.

Even after successful downloads, many players experienced difficulties logging in and slow loading times. The internet disruption lasted for several hours before resolving as players completed their downloads.

GSC Game World, the developer, expressed a mixture of pride and surprise at the event. Creative director Mariia Grygorovych stated, "It was hard for the whole country, and it's a bad thing because the internet is important, but at the same time it's like whoa!" She emphasized the positive impact, stating, "For us and our team, what's most important is, for some people in Ukraine, they feel a little bit happier than they were before release. We did something for our home country, something good for them."

The game's phenomenal success is undeniable. Within just two days of its launch, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 sold an impressive 1 million copies worldwide, with particularly strong sales in Ukraine, despite acknowledged performance issues and bugs.

GSC Game World, a Ukrainian studio operating from Kyiv and Prague, faced challenges in releasing the game due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which caused multiple launch delays. However, the studio persevered, releasing the game in November and continuing to address bugs and optimize performance with regular updates; the third major patch was released earlier this week.
