"New RPG Blends Witcher and Persona Styles"

by Brooklyn Jun 15,2025

The debut of *The Blood of Dawnwalker* has arrived with a cinematic reveal trailer that blends pre-rendered visuals with short gameplay snippets, offering a glimpse into the ambitious world crafted by Rebel Wolves. The game clearly draws inspiration from *The Witcher*, featuring a dark fantasy setting filled with monsters, morally complex decisions, and an outcast protagonist. But it doesn't stop there—Rebel Wolves also plans to integrate time management mechanics reminiscent of the *Persona* series, adding a fresh twist to the open-world RPG genre.

Developed by former CD Projekt Red developers known for their work on *The Witcher* and *Cyberpunk 2077*, *The Blood of Dawnwalker* was first teased in January 2024 under the title *Dawnwalker*. At its core, the game is a narrative-driven RPG promising impactful choices, deep storytelling, and an expansive world. After a year of anticipation, the full reveal came during a livestream event hosted by Rebel Wolves and Bandai Namco on January 13, culminating in a four-and-a-half-minute cinematic trailer that sets the tone for what's to come.

A Familiar Yet Unique Fantasy World

From the very beginning, *The Blood of Dawnwalker* leans into its *Witcher*-esque atmosphere—dark, mysterious, and full of creatures lurking in the shadows. The game’s tagline, “the world needs what it fears,” hints at the central theme of embracing monstrosity to survive. The story follows Coen, a man transformed into a Dawnwalker—a being similar to a vampire—at the start of the game. His journey revolves around saving his family while navigating a world that fears and shuns him. Much like Geralt’s adventures, players will face difficult moral dilemmas, choosing between embracing supernatural power or holding onto humanity.

Time Management Meets Open-World Design

Where *The Blood of Dawnwalker* truly distinguishes itself is through its innovative use of time-based progression. Inspired by *Persona*, every action you take consumes in-game time, meaning not all quests can be completed in a single playthrough. This mechanic encourages strategic decision-making, as players must choose which paths to pursue and which stories to leave behind. According to Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, co-founder and director of Rebel Wolves, this system creates a “narrative sandbox” where each player’s experience is uniquely shaped by the choices they make.

Looking Ahead: Platforms and Release Window

Currently in development for PC and current-gen consoles (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S), *The Blood of Dawnwalker* is planned as the first installment in a larger trilogy. With a triple-A budget and development starting in 2022, expectations are high. However, fans shouldn’t expect an early release—2027 appears to be the earliest possible launch window. Before then, Rebel Wolves plans to share a full gameplay reveal in summer 2025, giving players a clearer idea of how the game plays beyond the cinematic presentation.
