Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: A Rocky Start, But Promises of Improvement
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 experienced a turbulent launch, plagued by server issues, bugs, and instability. Jorg Neumann, head of MSFS, and Sebastian Wloch, CEO of Asobo Studio, addressed these problems in a recent YouTube video.
The overwhelming response from players exceeded expectations, causing significant strain on the game's servers and infrastructure. Neumann admitted underestimating the player base, stating that the influx "overwhelmed our infrastructure."
Wloch explained the technical challenges. The initial login process involves retrieving data from a server database. While tested with 200,000 simulated users, the actual player count far surpassed this, causing the database cache to repeatedly collapse. Attempts to mitigate this by increasing queue capacity only provided temporary relief.
This server overload resulted in extended loading times, often stalling at 97%, and also led to reports of missing in-game aircraft and content. These missing assets are a direct consequence of the server's inability to deliver complete data.
The negative player feedback on Steam reflects these launch difficulties, with the game currently rated "Mostly Negative." However, the development team assures players they are actively working on solutions, stating on Steam that they have addressed the core issues and are steadily onboarding players. A sincere apology was issued, alongside promises of continued updates via their social channels and website.
