Path of Exile 2 Devs Comment on Endgame Difficulty

by Riley Feb 13,2025

Path of Exile 2's challenging endgame has sparked debate among players, prompting a response from the developers. Co-directors Mark Roberts and Jonathan Rogers defended the difficulty in a recent interview, emphasizing the importance of meaningful consequences for death. They argued that the current system, which includes the loss of experience points during the Atlas of Worlds endgame, prevents players from progressing too quickly beyond their capabilities. Rogers stated, "...if you’re dying all the time then you’re probably not ready to keep going up the power curve."

The game, released in early access in December 2024, features a revamped skill system with 240 active skill gems and 12 character classes. After completing the main story, players unlock the challenging 100 endgame maps within the Atlas of Worlds. These maps present demanding encounters with powerful bosses and intricate layouts, requiring optimized builds and strategic gameplay.

While Grinding Gear Games acknowledges player feedback regarding the difficulty, they are carefully evaluating the various elements contributing to the endgame experience. The goal is to maintain the core challenge while potentially addressing specific concerns. The recent Patch 0.1.0 focused on bug fixes and stability improvements, particularly for the PlayStation 5 version. An upcoming Patch 0.1.1 is expected to further refine the gameplay.

Despite the difficulty, numerous guides and strategies exist to help players navigate the endgame, focusing on aspects like high-Waystone Tier maps, gear optimization, and effective portal usage. However, the demanding nature of Path of Exile 2's endgame continues to be a source of discussion among the player base.
