NetEase has confirmed workforce reductions within its Seattle-based design team for Marvel Rivals, citing "organizational optimization" needs. The decision comes despite the game's commercial success since its December launch.
Leadership Announces Unexpected Team Termination
Game director Thaddeus Sasser publicly disclosed the layoffs through a LinkedIn post that blended professional pride with dark humor. "We just delivered a hit franchise with Marvel Rivals... and got laid off for our efforts," wrote Sasser, whose design leadership helped shape the popular hero shooter.
Industry Responds to Development Paradox
The gaming community expressed bewilderment at the timing of these cuts, given Marvel Rivals' strong performance metrics: 20+ million downloads and impressive Steam concurrent player peaks since its free-to-play debut.
NetEase provided IGN with an official statement acknowledging the Seattle design team reduction while emphasizing continued support for the China-based core development group led by Weicong Wu and Guangyun Chen in Guangzhou.
Corporate Restructuring Continues
This marks NetEase's latest organizational shift following previous studio closures including Ouka Studios (Visions of Mana) and operational pauses at Mac Walters' Worlds Untold. The publisher also dissolved Jerry Hook's Jar of Sparks studio earlier this year.
The company maintains these changes won't affect ongoing Marvel Rivals development, promising increased investment in new heroes, maps, and live-service content. Affected employees are reportedly receiving severance packages, though exact headcount reductions remain undisclosed.
