In a revealing interview with Bloomberg, Carrie Patel, the second game director of Avowed, provided insight into the tumultuous development journey that saw the abandonment of two years of work. Initially, Obsidian Entertainment set out to create Avowed as a blend of Destiny and Skyrim, with ambitions to merge cooperative exploration in a vast open world with dynamic multiplayer features.
The first teaser trailer, released in 2020, sparked excitement among fans but hid the truth: the game was far from finished. Mere months after the trailer's debut, the decision was made to scrap the project entirely and begin from scratch. As a result, the teaser now serves as a reminder of an unreleased prototype that does not reflect the final game.
After the project's reboot, Carrie Patel took on the role of game director and reshaped Avowed's direction. Moving away from the initial inspirations of Skyrim and Destiny, she eliminated the open-world and multiplayer components. Instead, Obsidian returned to their strengths with a zone-based structure and concentrated on developing a captivating single-player narrative deeply connected to the Pillars of Eternity universe.
Restarting the project mid-development posed significant challenges, comparable to making a film without a script. Teams worked diligently under unpredictable conditions as the leadership sought to solidify a unified vision. Despite these obstacles, the development process extended for another four years before Avowed was finally released.
