EA Is Dealing the Final Blow to Origin, and Taking Some Users With It

by Allison Mar 04,2025

EA's Origin App, launched in 2011 as a rival to Steam, is finally being replaced by the EA app. This transition, however, comes with significant drawbacks. The clunky user experience and frustrating logins that plagued Origin haven't been resolved, and the switch presents challenges for existing users.

A major concern is the loss of access to games purchased on Origin if users don't actively migrate their accounts to the EA app. This leaves players potentially locked out of titles they've already paid for.

Furthermore, the EA app only supports 64-bit operating systems, abandoning users on 32-bit systems. While Steam also dropped 32-bit support in early 2024, this move raises questions about digital ownership and access to purchased games. While unlikely to affect most modern PC users, individuals still using 32-bit Windows versions (e.g., some Windows 10 installations prior to 2020) will be affected. Checking system RAM is a quick way to determine if your system is 32-bit (maximum 4GB RAM).

This situation highlights the limitations of digital rights management (DRM). The increasing prevalence of invasive DRM solutions, such as Denuvo, which often require deep system access, further complicates the issue. These limitations can restrict access to purchased games based on arbitrary factors beyond the user's control.

A potential solution is supporting platforms like GOG, which offers DRM-free games. This ensures continued access to purchased titles regardless of hardware changes, although it does present challenges for developers in preventing piracy. Despite this, GOG continues to attract new releases, with titles like the upcoming RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 on the horizon. The ongoing debate centers on balancing consumer access to purchased digital content with the challenges of preventing software piracy.
