Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - A Fresh Take on Turn-Based Combat

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Gameplay ScreenshotSet against the backdrop of Belle Epoque France, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 cleverly merges turn-based strategy with real-time action. Drawing heavily from iconic titles like Final Fantasy and Persona, the game aims to establish a distinctive identity within the genre.

Creative director Guillaume Broche, in an interview with Eurogamer, revealed his passion for turn-based games and the desire to create a visually stunning experience. He cited Persona (Atlus) and Octopath Traveler (Square Enix) as stylistic influences, explaining that the lack of high-fidelity graphics in the turn-based RPG market spurred him to action.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - Unique EnvironmentsThe game's narrative centers on preventing the mysterious Paintress from unleashing death once more, with environments like the gravity-defying Flying Waters adding to the unique atmosphere. Combat demands quick reflexes; while commands are input turn-based, players must react in real-time to enemy attacks. This innovative approach echoes elements seen in Persona, Final Fantasy, and Sea of Stars.

Broche expressed surprise at the overwhelmingly positive reception, noting that while he anticipated interest from turn-based fans, the level of excitement exceeded expectations.

While acknowledging Persona's influence, Broche clarified to PC Gamer that the Final Fantasy series (specifically FFVIII, IX, and X) had a more profound impact on the game's development. He emphasized that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not a direct imitation but rather a reflection of his personal gaming history and tastes. The game's dynamic camera movements and menus draw inspiration from Persona, but the overall aesthetic and design are uniquely its own.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - Open World ExplorationThe open world allows for seamless character switching and the use of traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles. Broche encourages players to experiment with character builds and combinations, aiming to create a game that resonates deeply with players, much like the classics did for him.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
