Avowed has achieved a successful release, with Microsoft and Obsidian expressing satisfaction with its sales figures. In an insightful interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the potential for expanding the game's universe. While no official plans have been announced, Patel expressed her enthusiasm for continuing to direct games and her interest in exploring new projects within the Avowed world. She stated, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."

Changes in Avowed During Development

The development journey of Avowed was fraught with challenges and significant shifts. Patel candidly shared that the process was messy but ultimately rewarding. Initially conceived in 2018, the project faced hurdles as Obsidian navigated its acquisition by Microsoft, announced in 2020. The development saw the team forgoing several planned features, including multiplayer aspects, and undergoing a leadership change and project reboot in January 2021.

Under Patel's leadership, managing a team of over 80 people, the focus shifted to enhancing the story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity franchise. The team also transitioned from an open world to open zones, allowing for more detailed and immersive environments. Reflecting on her experience, Patel noted, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."

With Avowed bringing renewed attention to the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian is exploring new avenues, including the development of a tactics game. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Director Josh Sawyer expressed the studio's interest in creating "Pillars: Tactics." He acknowledged the widespread interest in tactics games both among the studio's developers and the gaming community. However, Sawyer highlighted the challenges in determining the project's scope, including team size, visual quality, and overall scale.

While the idea of Pillars: Tactics is gaining traction, Sawyer also expressed his ambition to develop Pillars of Eternity 3 with a substantial budget akin to that of Baldur’s Gate 3, estimated at $100 million, a significant increase from the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
