Scalebound: Hints of a Possible Revival?

Scalebound was once heralded as one of the most ambitious action projects of its time, promising to blend dynamic combat, an immersive soundtrack, and a unique system of interaction with a colossal dragon companion. This title was one of the few Xbox One exclusives that sparked immense interest but unfortunately never saw the light of day. Initially announced in 2014, the game's development was officially terminated by Microsoft in 2017.

Recently, Clovers Inc's official account on X shared a video featuring Hideki Kamiya and his colleagues revisiting archived gameplay footage of Scalebound. Kamiya expressed nostalgia for the game's development process and reiterated his pride in the project, despite its cancellation. He further amplified his sentiments by retweeting the video with a direct message to Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft's gaming division, stating, "Come on, Phil, let's do this!". This plea suggests Kamiya's ongoing interest in reviving the game, a sentiment he had previously shared in early 2022, expressing a desire to re-engage with Microsoft on the project.

Discussions about Scalebound's potential revival have been a recurring topic, with rumors intensifying in early 2023. Several sources hinted at a possible reboot, though Microsoft remained silent on the matter. In an interview with Game Watch, a Japanese publication, Phil Spencer responded to questions about Scalebound with a smile and a non-committal, "I have nothing to add at this time".

Even if Microsoft were to reconsider the project, a swift revival isn't on the horizon. Hideki Kamiya is currently focused on developing a new installment of Okami at Clovers Inc. Should Xbox greenlight Scalebound's return, Kamiya would only be able to commence work after concluding his present commitments. Nonetheless, the continued interest in Scalebound over the years offers a glimmer of hope that this long-awaited game might eventually see its release.
