Nightingale is \"Too Open World\" According to Ex-Mass Effect Devs

by Matthew Apr 14,2025

Nightingale, the innovative open-world crafting survival game developed by Inflexion Games, is set to undergo significant transformations. Spearheaded by former Bioware executive Aaryn Flynn, the team at Inflexion Games has acknowledged the game's current shortcomings and is preparing a major update slated for the end of summer. This update aims to refine Nightingale's gameplay, addressing issues that have been highlighted by both the developers and the gaming community.

In a recent YouTube video, Flynn and art and audio director Neil Thomson provided a candid assessment of Nightingale's current state. They admitted that the game, while beloved, has not yet met their expectations. "We are not satisfied with where the game is at, we're not satisfied with the overall sentiment, we're not satisfied with our player numbers," Flynn confessed. Since its early access launch in February, the team has been diligently working on quality of life improvements and bug fixes, including the addition of an offline mode, which was a highly requested feature among players.

Nightingale invites players to explore the enigmatic and perilous Fae Realms. However, the game's expansive open-world nature has been critiqued as being "almost too open world, too self-motivated in terms of goal-setting," according to Thomson. To address this, Inflexion Games plans to introduce more structure to the gameplay. This includes clearer progression indicators, specific objectives, and varied designs for the realms, which players have described as "samey and repetitive."

"We do love the game very much, but we do think there's a lot of room to improve it," Flynn emphasized. The upcoming update will focus on enhancing the player's sense of progression and providing a better understanding of the game's mechanics and the distinctions between the various Realms. Additionally, the team is considering adjustments to the game's core elements and plans to increase build limits, allowing for more ambitious and complex structures. Flynn teased that previews of these new features would be available in the coming weeks.

Despite Nightingale's 'Mixed' ratings on Steam, the trend of positive reviews is on the rise, with approximately 68% of recent reviews being positive. Flynn and Thomson expressed their appreciation for the community's support and encouraged ongoing feedback. "We played this new version really recently, and there's still a bit more work to do, but I think it's elevated it quite a bit, but obviously you'll all be the judge of that when we bring this thing out," Flynn concluded.

Echoing the sentiments of both fans and the developers, Game8 noted that Nightingale currently lacks sufficient guidance and overcomplicates certain mechanics, such as crafting. For a detailed analysis, you can read our comprehensive review of Nightingale by clicking on the link below.
