Sony Unveils teamLFG: New PlayStation Studio Crafting Team-Based Action Game

by Connor May 15,2025

Sony has recently unveiled a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, originating from the renowned Destiny and Marathon developer Bungie. The studio is currently working on an ambitious incubation project, as shared by Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, in a post on the PlayStation Blog. This project has sparked excitement within the gaming community due to its unique blend of genres and focus on social gaming.

teamLFG, which stands for 'Looking For Group,' is set to explore the realms of team-based action games. Their debut game draws inspiration from a diverse mix of genres including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and even "frog-type games." This game will immerse players in a lighthearted, comedic world set within a new, mythic, science-fantasy universe. The studio's mission is to foster friendship, community, and belonging among players, emphasizing the joy of social interactions in gaming.

"We are driven by a mission to create games where players can find friendship, community, and belonging," teamLFG stated. They aim to create an environment where players can log in to find their teammates already online, recognize familiar names, and create memorable moments from matches. The team highlighted their desire for players to relive epic plays that alter the course of a game, describing it as "dat’s da good stuff."

The studio plans to develop immersive multiplayer worlds that players can engage with for countless hours, learning, playing, and mastering the game. They intend to involve the community in the development process through early access playtests, staying agile enough to adapt based on player feedback both before and after the game's launch, ensuring continuous growth and evolution.

teamLFG's project emerged from significant changes at Bungie, following its acquisition by Sony. Amidst financial struggles and the declining performance of Destiny 2, Bungie underwent layoffs, with around 100 employees let go in November 2023 and an additional 220 in 2024, which represented 17% of the studio's workforce. Some staff were integrated into other parts of Sony Interactive Entertainment, and it was during this period that the incubation project was spun off into teamLFG.

Recent developments at Bungie include the full reveal of the extraction shooter Marathon and the announcement of the future roadmap for Destiny 2. However, plans for Destiny 3 have been shelved, along with a Destiny spinoff known as Payback. A former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in pushing through improvements for Destiny 2, indicating a positive impact from the parent company.
