Pokémon TCG Pocket Gets Trading Today and Players Absolutely Hate It

by Daniel Feb 23,2025

Pokémon TCG Pocket's highly anticipated trading update has arrived, but instead of celebrating, players are expressing widespread disappointment. The trading system, already criticized last week for its restrictions, has launched to an even more negative reception due to its excessive requirements.

The trading process demands two consumable items: Trade Stamina and Trade Tokens. Trade Stamina, replenishing over time or purchasable with Poké Gold (real money), is a familiar mechanic. However, it's the Trade Token system that's sparking outrage.

Trading cards of 3 Diamonds or higher necessitates Trade Tokens. The cost is steep: 120 Tokens for a 3 Diamond card, 400 for a 1 Star card, and 500 for a 4 Diamond (ex Pokémon) card.

Trade Tokens are acquired by discarding cards from a player's collection. The exchange rate is unfavorable: five ex Pokémon must be sold to trade one, for instance. Selling even the rarest Crown cards yields insufficient Tokens to trade many higher-rarity cards. Lower rarity cards are worthless for trading.

Overwhelming Negative Feedback

Reddit posts and comments are flooded with criticism, labeling the update a "monumental failure," "hilariously toxic," and an "insult." Players decry the excessive costs and laborious process, noting the 15-second delay per card exchange. Many are vowing to stop spending money on the game. The high cost of trading is seen as a blatant attempt to maximize revenue, especially considering the game's estimated $200 million in first-month revenue before the trading update. The inability to easily trade higher-rarity cards is also seen as a tactic to push players towards further in-app purchases.

One user points out the unsustainable nature of the system, noting the requirement of three copies of a card before it can even be sold for tokens.

Creatures Inc.'s Silence

Creatures Inc. remains silent on the backlash, despite previously acknowledging concerns. IGN has reached out for comment, but a response is pending. While adding Trade Tokens as mission rewards could mitigate the problem, it's more likely that Trade Stamina will be rewarded instead, mirroring the current reward system for similar mechanics.

The launch of this poorly-received trading system casts a shadow over the upcoming update, which will introduce Diamond and Pearl Pokémon like Dialga and Palkia. The negative reception raises serious questions about the game's future and its developers' priorities.
