Insomniac Games Explores Further Game-to-Screen Adaptations Amidst Leadership Changes
Insomniac Games, the renowned developer behind the beloved Ratchet and Clank series, is showing keen interest in expanding their portfolio into more game-to-screen adaptations. This news comes directly from co-Studio Head Ryan Schneider, who shared his thoughts during a recent interview with Variety. The discussion took place shortly after the announcement of the retirement of Insomniac's founder and long-time CEO, Ted Price.
"I think back to the Ratchet and Clank film from several years ago. And we kind of got an early start on that. So, of course, we’re interested in that kind of thing. We love Ratchet and Clank in particular," Schneider remarked, highlighting the studio's affection for the franchise. The 2016 Ratchet and Clank movie, while receiving mixed reviews, has not deterred Insomniac from exploring further adaptations, especially with the backing of Sony, who acquired the studio in 2019. Sony's successful track record with game adaptations, such as the critically acclaimed The Last of Us series, bolsters Insomniac's confidence in their future projects.
Sony’s Expanding Video Game Adaptations
Sony has been at the forefront of transforming video games into compelling movies and TV series. Notable successes include the 2022 Uncharted film and the 2023 The Last of Us TV series. At the recent CES 2025 press conference, Sony unveiled an exciting lineup of upcoming projects. The Last of Us Season 2 is set to premiere on HBO in April 2025, followed by the Until Dawn live-action film in the same month. Additionally, fans can look forward to the Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime series on Crunchyroll in 2027. Sony is also developing a Helldivers feature film and a Horizon Zero Dawn live-action film, though specific release dates for these projects have yet to be announced.
Leadership Transition at Insomniac Games
In a significant leadership change, Insomniac Games' founder and CEO, Ted Price, announced his retirement after an illustrious 30-year career. Price, who has been instrumental in creating iconic franchises like Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Marvel’s Spider-Man, shared, "I actually made this decision last year. For me, after over 30 years of leading Insomniac, I felt it was simply time to step aside and let others pave the way for our team."
Taking the helm are three seasoned Insomniac veterans: Ryan Schneider, Chad Dezern, and Jen Huang, who will serve as co-Studio Heads. Price expressed his confidence in the new leadership, stating, "I believe strongly that for us to continue our success, we need leaders at the top who are intimately familiar with how we do things, leaders who have helped build our culture and our processes, and who have earned people’s trust."
As Insomniac Games looks to the future, the studio's interest in game-to-screen adaptations, combined with Sony's proven success in this arena, promises exciting developments for fans of their beloved franchises.
