PlayStation's new studio tackles a unique MOBA: Project "Gummy Bears"
A PlayStation first-party title, codenamed "Gummy Bears," is generating buzz for its unique approach to the MOBA genre. Initially developed at Bungie, the project has transitioned to a newly formed PlayStation studio in Los Angeles, comprising approximately 40 former Bungie employees.
Initially revealed in August 2023 by The Game Post, Gummy Bears is described as a MOBA drawing inspiration from the Super Smash Bros. franchise. Unlike traditional health bars, the game reportedly uses a percentage-based damage system. High damage percentages result in characters being knocked back, and potentially knocked off the map entirely, echoing the mechanics of Super Smash Bros.
The game is expected to feature the standard MOBA character classes: Attack, Defense, and Support, alongside multiple game modes. Its art style is described as inviting, vibrant, and "lo-fi," a departure from Bungie's previous work. This stylistic shift aims to attract a younger audience than Bungie's usual player base.
Development on Gummy Bears began at Bungie in 2022, making it a project with at least three years of development under its belt. While its release date remains undisclosed, it's likely still several years away. The shift to a new PlayStation studio suggests a significant investment in the project and a commitment to its unique vision.
