Hironobu Sakaguchi, the legendary creator of Final Fantasy, has reignited his passion for game development, setting his sights on crafting a spiritual successor to the beloved Final Fantasy 6. Dive into the latest updates on his ambitious new project.
The Successor to Final Fantasy 6
After the triumph of Fantasian Neo Dimension, which hit the gaming scene in 2021, Hironobu Sakaguchi had planned to hang up his creative hat. However, the overwhelming success and joy of working with his talented team changed his mind. In a recent chat with The Verge, Sakaguchi expressed his desire to develop a new game that would serve as "a successor to Final Fantasy VI." This project, he explained, would be "part two of my farewell note," blending nostalgia with innovation to create something truly special.
Development on Sakaguchi's Latest Project
In a 2024 interview with Famitsu, Sakaguchi shared insights into his new venture. Having penned the script a year ago, he is optimistic about reaching significant milestones within the next two years. Speculation about a sequel arose when Mistwalker trademarked "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" in June 2024. While the project remains shrouded in mystery, Sakaguchi confirmed it will echo the fantasy RPG style of his past works. Fans eagerly await further details on this eagerly anticipated title.
Reuniting with Square Enix for FANTASIAN Neo Dimension
The collaboration between Mistwalker and Square Enix brought FANTASIAN Neo Dimension to a broader audience, releasing on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch in December 2024. Originally an Apple Arcade exclusive in 2021, the game has been lauded as one of the platform's finest offerings. Reflecting on this partnership, Sakaguchi remarked, "It’s the place where I started my career, so coming full circle through the game I envisioned to be my final work was definitely a fascinating experience."
Sakaguchi's journey began at Square (now Square Enix) in 1983, where he directed the original Final Fantasy in 1987 and led the series through its next four mainline titles. After serving as a producer for Final Fantasy 6 to Final Fantasy 11, he founded Mistwalker in 2003. Under this new banner, he developed titles like Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and The Last Story. Despite the recent collaboration, Sakaguchi remains firm in his stance against revisiting Final Fantasy or his previous works, preferring to focus on new creations as a consumer rather than a creator.
