Bungie's Marathon: A Year of Silence, a Promise of Playtests

After a year of radio silence, Bungie's upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, Marathon, finally received a much-anticipated developer update. Announced at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, the game generated considerable excitement, but subsequent updates were scarce.

Game Director Joe Ziegler addressed the community, confirming the game's ongoing development and stating it's "on track." While gameplay footage remains under wraps, Ziegler revealed plans for a class-based system featuring customizable "Runners," each with unique abilities. He showcased preliminary screenshots of two Runners: "Thief" and "Stealth," hinting at their respective gameplay styles.

Expanded playtests are scheduled for 2025, offering a chance for more players to experience the game. Ziegler encouraged fans to wishlist Marathon on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation to demonstrate interest and facilitate future communication.

A Reimagining of a Classic

Marathon is a fresh take on Bungie's 1990s trilogy, marking the studio's most significant departure from the Destiny franchise in over a decade. While not a direct sequel, it inhabits the same universe and retains the feel of a classic Bungie title. Set on Tau Ceti IV, the game casts players as Runners competing for alien artifacts and valuable loot, either solo or in teams of three. High-stakes encounters with rival crews and tense extractions are promised.

Originally envisioned as a purely PvP experience with no single-player campaign, Ziegler hinted at additions to modernize the game and introduce a new narrative arc with ongoing updates. Cross-play and cross-save functionality will be available across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Challenges and Changes

The development journey hasn't been without its hurdles. The departure of original project lead Chris Barrett in March 2024, following accusations of inappropriate behavior, and subsequent studio layoffs (approximately 17% of the workforce) undoubtedly impacted the project's timeline.

Despite the delays and setbacks, the developer update provides a glimmer of hope, suggesting that Marathon is progressing, albeit at a slower pace. The promise of expanded playtests in 2025 offers a tangible milestone for eager fans awaiting further news.
