Assassin's Creed Shadows: Revamped Parkour and Dual Protagonists
Assassin's Creed Shadows, launching February 14th, introduces significant changes, particularly to its parkour system and character design. This latest installment takes the franchise to feudal Japan, featuring dual protagonists with distinct playstyles.
A New Approach to Parkour:
Ubisoft has significantly altered the parkour mechanics. Instead of free-climbing most surfaces, players will navigate designated "parkour highways." While this might initially seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable areas remain accessible, albeit requiring a more strategic approach. This focused design allows for more controlled level design, particularly differentiating the movement capabilities of the two protagonists. The system also incorporates seamless ledge dismounts, enabling stylish flips and dives during descents. A new prone position adds to the fluidity, allowing for diving while sprinting alongside sliding. The grappling hook will also play a key role in accessing certain areas.
Dual Protagonists, Diverse Gameplay:
Shadows introduces Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at scaling walls and shadow maneuvering, and Yasuke, a powerful samurai excelling in open combat but limited in climbing abilities. This dual protagonist system aims to appeal to both fans of classic Assassin's Creed stealth and those who prefer the more action-oriented RPG combat of titles like Odyssey and Valhalla. The differing parkour capabilities of Naoe and Yasuke further enhance this gameplay diversity.
February Launch and Competition:
Launching on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 14th, Assassin's Creed Shadows faces stiff competition from other highly anticipated releases, including Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed. The coming weeks will likely reveal further details about this ambitious title.
