Jar of Sparks, NetEase-Backed Studio, Pauses Development on Debut Title
Jerry Hook, former design lead for Halo Infinite, announced that his studio, Jar of Sparks, has temporarily halted development on its first game project. The studio, established in 2022 under the NetEase umbrella, was aiming to deliver a "next-generation narrative-driven action game." However, the team is now actively seeking a new publishing partner to help realize its creative vision.
Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause, emphasizing the team's commitment to finding a partner that can effectively support their ambitious goals. He expressed pride in the progress made and the "bold risks" taken to create something innovative. While layoffs weren't explicitly stated, a subsequent post indicated the studio would assist team members in finding new roles as the initial project concludes.
NetEase, a prominent global gaming company, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and the recently launched Marvel Rivals. The latter's successful launch and upcoming content updates, including the addition of the Fantastic Four, highlight NetEase's continued investment in live-service models.
This isn't the first instance of a veteran game developer forming a new studio with NetEase. Hiroyuki Kobayashi, a former Resident Evil producer, established GPTRACK50 Studios under NetEase in 2022.
The news comes amidst ongoing developments within the Halo franchise. Following a period of challenges surrounding Halo Infinite's post-launch content and the Halo TV series, 343 Industries has rebranded as Halo Studios and is shifting to Unreal Engine for future projects. This restructuring could signal a potential resurgence for the franchise.
While Jar of Sparks' future remains uncertain, the search for a new publisher suggests a commitment to completing their initial project. The team's experience and ambition, combined with the potential for a new publishing partnership, could still lead to a successful outcome.
