Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Exclusion from Avengers, X-Men

by Nora May 03,2025

Ryan Reynolds has cast doubt on the possibility of Deadpool joining either the Avengers or the X-Men, suggesting that such a move would signal the end of the character's journey. In a recent interview with Time, Reynolds stated, "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end. That's wish fulfillment, and you can't give him that." This comes despite the character's clear obsession with joining the Avengers, as seen in the successful film Deadpool & Wolverine. Speculation had been rife that Marvel Studios might want to integrate the 'Merc with a Mouth' into their next big project, Avengers: Doomsday, slated for release next year.

The cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday last month included a heavy emphasis on veteran X-Men actors, such as Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden. This has led some to speculate that Avengers: Doomsday might be setting up an Avengers vs. X-Men storyline. Grammer, known for playing Beast in the Fox X-Men franchise, made his MCU debut in The Marvels' post-credits scene. Stewart, who portrayed Charles Xavier/Professor X, appeared in the MCU in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as part of the Illuminati. Meanwhile, McKellen (Magneto), Cumming (Nightcrawler), Romijn (Mystique), and Marsden (Cyclops) have yet to make their MCU debuts.

Despite the speculation, Reynolds' name was absent from the Avengers: Doomsday cast list, which did include Channing Tatum, who played Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine. Reynolds hinted that a cameo appearance, similar to Wesley Snipes' well-received cameo as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine, might be more suitable for Deadpool than a formal integration into either superhero team.

Looking ahead, Reynolds mentioned he is currently writing a new project involving an "ensemble," though he remained tight-lipped about the details. This could potentially lead to another Deadpool film that focuses heavily on cameos, much like Deadpool & Wolverine. Characters such as Jennifer Garner's Elektra and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23, who appeared in the previous film, could return, alongside others like Snipes' Blade and Tatum's Gambit.

As for Avengers: Doomsday, while the cast is impressive, details about the plot remain scarce. Anthony Mackie, set to reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, expressed optimism about the film, suggesting it would recapture the "old Marvel feeling." Other cast members like Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Joseph Quinn (Human Torch) have also shared their excitement. A recent set photo leak has sparked further discussion among fans, with some interpreting it as a sign of trouble for the X-Men.

Rumors have also circulated about Oscar Isaac potentially appearing as Moon Knight in Avengers: Doomsday, fueled by his withdrawal from a Star Wars event due to scheduling conflicts. Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige confirmed that the cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday was not exhaustive, hinting that more surprises may be in store.
