Nintendo Switch 2: Genki's CES Mockup Reveals Key Features
Genki, a prominent handheld gaming accessory developer, unveiled a 3D-printed Nintendo Switch 2 mockup at CES 2025, revealing several key design features. CEO Eddie Tsai confirmed details gleaned from a black-market acquired Switch 2 unit, used as a basis for the accurate replica.
The mockup showcased a larger console, approaching the size of Valve's Steam Deck. A significant change is the adoption of magnetic Joy-Con controllers, featuring SL and SR buttons with magnetic attachment. Detachment is facilitated by a button on each Joy-Con that releases a pin, overcoming the magnetic hold. Despite the magnetic design, Tsai assures users of secure Joy-Con functionality during gameplay.
Further details emerged from Tsai's interview with The Verge. The Joy-Con's mounting channels incorporate optical sensors, suggesting potential functionality as mouse controls via a yet-to-be-released accessory. Leaked Switch 2 images seemingly corroborate this feature.
While larger than its predecessor, the Switch 2 remains slim enough to physically fit within the existing Switch dock. However, structural differences prevent compatibility. The purpose of a new "C" button and an additional USB-C port remains unknown.
