Jack Black Built Mansion on Private Minecraft Movie Server

by Finn May 04,2025

The recently released A Minecraft Movie has taken an innovative approach to authenticity by integrating a private Minecraft server for its cast and crew. This immersive tool allowed the team to live and breathe the game's world, significantly enhancing their creative process. Jack Black, who portrays Steve in the film, fully embraced this opportunity, demonstrating his dedication by constructing an impressive mansion atop the server's highest mountain, complete with a unique art gallery in the basement.

Producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson shared with IGN that the server created an atmosphere reminiscent of an indie game studio, buzzing with creativity and collaboration. Although not all ideas generated could be incorporated into the film due to its ongoing development, the server allowed for additional flair and authenticity to be added to A Minecraft Movie.

Director Jared Hess praised Black's commitment, noting his methodical approach to playing Minecraft. Black spent considerable time in his trailer, engaging with the game and harvesting resources like lapis lazuli, which fueled his creative contributions to the film. "It was so much fun," Hess remarked, highlighting how Black's enthusiasm and ideas were a constant source of inspiration.

Jack Black himself humorously acknowledged his dedication, stating, "I had an Xbox in my trailer and I did play because an actor prepares." His goal was to prove his Minecraft prowess by building a standout structure, which he achieved with his mansion and art gallery. Although unsure if his creation still exists, Black's efforts left a lasting impression on the server.

Ólafsson confirmed that Black's mansion remains intact and has been maintained for over a year. During a recent visit, he encountered two security guards from the set still actively using the server, showcasing the lasting impact of this unique filmmaking tool.

The use of a Minecraft server not only enriched the production of A Minecraft Movie but also fostered a sense of community and creativity among the cast and crew.
