Electronic Arts has taken a momentous step, releasing the source code for four legendary Command & Conquer titles: Command & Conquer, Command & Conquer: Red Alert, Command & Conquer: Renegade, and Command & Conquer: Generals. These classics are now freely available on GitHub under an open license, inviting fans and developers to explore, modify, and revitalize these beloved games.
This generous move extends beyond the source code. EA has also integrated Steam Workshop support for newer Command & Conquer games utilizing the SAGE engine, including Kane's Wrath and Red Alert 3. This allows players to effortlessly create and share custom content, fostering a thriving community and encouraging collaborative creativity.
Although EA may not be actively developing new Command & Conquer games currently, the series retains a massive and dedicated fanbase. By opening the source code and bolstering modding capabilities, EA empowers this community to breathe new life into these cherished titles, potentially attracting a new generation of players to experience and contribute to the rich history of Command & Conquer.
