The acclaimed series Shōgun, which swept up an impressive 18 Emmy Awards and 4 Golden Globes, is gearing up for an eagerly awaited second season. According to an official press release from FX, Cosmo Jarvis, who brilliantly portrays pilot John Blackthorn, has confirmed his return for Season 2. Not only will Jarvis reprise his role, but he will also step into the position of co-executive producer, bringing his vision to the new season.
Joining him, lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays Lord Yoshii Toranaga, signed on for Season 2 last May after the series was renewed, despite initially being conceived as a limited series. Sanada, who was involved as a producer in the first season, has been elevated to the role of executive producer for the upcoming season. Production for Season 2 is set to kick off in January 2026, returning to the picturesque filming location of Vancouver, where the original series was shot.
FX has described the second season of Shōgun as "a wholly original new chapter to the first season," which was a masterful adaptation of James Clavell’s novel. The network provided insight into how the two seasons are linked, stating:
"In the first season, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) fought for his survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents united against him. When a mysterious European ship was found marooned in a nearby village, its English pilot John Blackthorne (Jarvis) shared vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tipped the scales of power in his favor to win a century-defining civil war.
"Part two of Shōgun is set 10 years after the events of the first season and continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined."
Fans of this exceptional series can look forward to new episodes, hopefully by the end of 2026. Until then, we can only wait with bated breath and keep our fingers crossed for more of this captivating storytelling.
