Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is packed with challenging boss battles, and Dularn, The Creeping Shadow, marks the first formidable encounter for players. Tackling the initial boss in any game can be a significant challenge, and Dularn certainly lives up to that reputation.
As the first real test of skill, it's common for players to need several attempts to overcome him. However, with the right strategies, this battle can be conquered quickly and efficiently.
How to Beat Dularn in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana
At the start of the fight, Dularn surrounds himself with a protective spherical barrier, rendering him invulnerable to damage. Your strategy should focus on surviving his onslaught until the barrier dissipates. Once it does, you'll have a window to land multiple hits on Dularn. His health varies with the chosen difficulty level, so if you're struggling, consider revisiting earlier areas to gain more experience. Remember, Dularn is a mandatory boss, so you'll need to defeat him to progress.
Avoid getting too close to Dularn when his barrier is up, as contact will cause damage. Attempting to attack him during this phase is futile and will only lead to your defeat.
Dularn's Sword Attacks
Dularn employs multiple swords in his arsenal, each with unique attack patterns that you need to learn and dodge effectively.
- He summons swords that hover above him before striking down at the player.
- He forms an X-shaped pattern with the swords, which then homes in on you.
- He thrusts a straight line of swords directly towards you.
Dealing with these homing projectiles can be tricky, but a simple yet effective strategy is to run in wide circles around Dularn while his barrier is active. This helps you evade the first two types of sword strikes. However, the positioning of the swords can still pose a threat, so always jump as a secondary dodge tactic. For the straight line of swords, timing your jump right before they hit is crucial to avoid damage.
Once Dularn's barrier falls, he becomes vulnerable to your sword attacks. After taking significant damage, he teleports away. Keep your distance when he reappears, as he will regenerate his barrier and deal damage if you're too close.
Dularn's Wave Blasts
Dularn unleashes two types of wave attacks: a barrage of fireballs and a sweeping blue slash.
Fireballs
You can navigate through the fireballs by weaving between them or jumping over them. Combine movement with jumping to ensure you avoid taking any hits.
Arching Slash
The arching slash is a full-screen attack with no gaps. The only way to evade it is by jumping over it. These wave attacks often signal when Dularn's barrier is about to drop, so use them as a cue to prepare for your attack.
The key to mastering this battle is understanding Dularn's attack patterns; there's no need to grind levels to beat him.
