Sony's recent policy changes regarding PC gaming have stirred significant reactions among the gaming community. Previously, the company mandated a connection to the PlayStation Network (PSN) even for single-player games on PC, which many gamers found restrictive, especially since PSN is not available in all regions, thereby limiting the sale of modern releases.
In response to the outcry, Sony has announced modifications to this policy. While the concept of tethering to PSN on PC is not entirely abandoned, certain relaxations have been introduced. Specifically, the following games will no longer require mandatory PSN tethering:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarok
- The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
For those who choose to connect to PSN, Sony is offering enticing incentives:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the “2099” line of costumes for both Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
- God of War Ragnarok: Immediate access to the Armor of the Black Bear set and the first “Lost Things” chest at the game's beginning, along with a set of resources.
- The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered: Bonus points to unlock various features.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.
In November, in response to investor inquiries, Sony's COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged the opposition to the PSN connection requirement. He emphasized its importance for maintaining security and order, particularly in service-based games. However, he did not clarify how this measure enhances safety in single-player titles like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök.
As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, Sony's adjustments reflect an attempt to balance community feedback with their strategic objectives.
