Transformers: Reactivate Officially Cancelled by Splash Damage
After a prolonged and challenging development, Splash Damage has announced the cancellation of its Transformers: Reactivate project. This decision, while difficult, may unfortunately result in staff layoffs.
Initially unveiled at The Game Awards 2022, Transformers: Reactivate was envisioned as a 1-4 player online game featuring Autobots and Decepticons uniting against a new alien threat. While early leaks and toy releases hinted at a roster including Ironhide, Hot Rod, Starscream, Soundwave, Optimus Prime, and Bumblebee, and even possibly Beast Wars characters, the game will not see the light of day.
Splash Damage's announcement on Twitter expressed gratitude to the development team and Hasbro for their support. Fan reaction has been varied, with some expressing disappointment while others anticipated the cancellation given the lack of updates since the initial trailer.
The studio is now fully focused on "Project Astrid," a AAA open-world survival game built with Unreal Engine 5, a project announced in March 2023 in collaboration with streamers Shroud and Sacriel. This shift in focus, however, will unfortunately lead to job losses within the company. The cancellation leaves Transformers fans still awaiting a high-quality, new game featuring the iconic robots.
In short:
- Cancellation: Transformers: Reactivate is cancelled.
- Layoffs: Potential staff reductions at Splash Damage.
- New Focus: Splash Damage prioritizes "Project Astrid," an open-world survival game.
