Sony has announced a significant shift in its PlayStation Plus service, focusing exclusively on PlayStation 5 games starting in January 2026. This change was revealed alongside the February 2025 monthly game titles on the PlayStation Blog. Sony stated, "As we shift to PS5, PS4 games will no longer be a key benefit and will only be occasionally offered for PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog." This update will not impact the PS4 games that subscribers have already claimed, though PS4 titles in the Games Catalog will remain playable until they are rotated out of the service.
Sony emphasized its commitment to enhancing the PlayStation Plus experience, promising to "continue to evolve the experience of PlayStation Plus and optimize the benefits you receive, including exclusive discounts, online multiplayer access, online game save storage, and more." The company is eager to expand its PS5 game offerings, stating, "As we shift our focus to PS5, we look forward to adding new PS5 titles monthly for you to enjoy."
This move comes as Sony notes a significant transition among its user base, with "many of our players currently playing on PS5 and have shifted toward redeeming and accessing PS5 titles." The PS4, launched in 2013, has been succeeded by the PS5, which debuted in 2020, marking over a decade since the PS4's release and more than four years since the PS5's launch.
It remains uncertain whether Sony will reclassify PS4 games into the Classics Catalog, which currently features titles from the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3. Sony is expected to provide more details as the transition date approaches.
