Sega's Risk-Taking Approach Fuels RGG Studio's Ambitious Projects
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (RGG Studio) thrives on Sega's willingness to embrace risk and innovation, enabling the studio to juggle multiple large-scale projects simultaneously. This commitment to pushing boundaries is evident in RGG Studio's upcoming slate, which includes a brand-new IP and a fresh take on a classic franchise.
Sega Embraces Innovation and New IPs
RGG Studio currently has several major projects underway, including a completely original IP. Despite already having the next Like a Dragon installment and a Virtua Fighter remake slated for 2025, the studio recently unveiled two additional titles. Studio head and director Masayoshi Yokoyama attributes this opportunity to Sega's proactive approach to risk-taking.
In early December, RGG Studio released trailers for two distinct projects within the same week. Project Century, a new IP set in 1915 Japan, debuted at The Game Awards 2025, followed by a trailer for a new Virtua Fighter project (separate from the upcoming Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. remaster) on Sega's official channel. The scale and ambition of these projects highlight Sega's confidence in RGG Studio's capabilities.
"Sega accepts the possibility of failure; it doesn't just stick to safe bets," Yokoyama explained to Famitsu, as translated by Automaton Media. He sees this risk tolerance as integral to Sega's identity, citing the creation of Shenmue as an example. Initially working with the Virtua Fighter IP, Sega sought new avenues, leading to the question: "What if we made ‘VF’ into an RPG?" This innovative thinking birthed the action-adventure Shenmue series.
RGG Studio assures fans that the simultaneous development of these projects won't compromise quality, particularly for the Virtua Fighter series. Original creator Yu Suzuki has voiced his support for the new project, and with Virtua Fighter being a cornerstone Sega IP, Yokoyama, Virtua Fighter Project producer Riichiro Yamada, and their team are committed to delivering a high-quality product.
Yamada added, "With the new ‘VF,’ we aim to create something innovative that will resonate with a broad audience. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to the series, we hope you'll stay tuned for more updates!" Yokoyama echoed this sentiment, expressing excitement for both upcoming titles.
