Project Zomboid's vast map encourages vehicle use, and hotwiring offers a solution when keys are unavailable. While not overly complex, hotwiring requires specific prerequisites.
Hotwiring in Project Zomboid
Successfully hotwiring allows vehicle operation as long as fuel and condition permit, bypassing the need for keys. However, Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills are necessary, unless you choose the Burglar profession at character creation, which bypasses these skill requirements.
Hotwiring Steps:
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait.
Upon meeting the prerequisites, these steps will hotwire any operable vehicle. The process is automated; press W to start the engine once complete. Remember to check fuel levels beforehand.
Skill Progression:
For non-Burglar characters, skill levels increase through specific actions:
- Electrical: Dismantling electronics (watches, radios, televisions).
- Mechanics: Removing and reinstalling mechanical parts.
Books and magazines found in homes and businesses (mailboxes, sheds, bookshelves) also provide skill boosts. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command to directly grant skill XP. Appropriate tools (screwdrivers, etc.) are required for dismantling/installation. Right-clicking vehicle parts and selecting "Vehicle Mechanics" allows part removal.
