Project Mugen Is Now Called Ananta, Devs Drop New Trailer

Remember Project Mugen, the anticipated urban open-world RPG from Naked Rain and NetEase? It's officially been renamed Ananta.

First unveiled at Gamescom 2023, the game has finally resurfaced with a new trailer after a long silence. More information is promised on December 5th, but for now, enjoy the official trailer:

Why the Name Change?

The developers haven't yet commented on the reason behind the name change. Interestingly, "Ananta" means "infinite" in Sanskrit, mirroring the meaning of "Mugen" (also "infinite"). The Chinese title reinforces this thematic consistency.

The gaming community is divided on the name change, but universally relieved the project hasn't been cancelled. Comparisons are already being drawn between Ananta and Hotta Studio's upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness. While Ananta's trailer is visually striking, its lack of gameplay footage leaves Neverness to Everness potentially ahead in some players' eyes. Personally, Ananta boasts a more appealing aesthetic.

A Curious Turn of Events

Ironically, the Project Mugen team has deleted all their original social media accounts, including a YouTube channel with over 100,000 subscribers and millions of views. They retained and simply renamed their Discord server, but otherwise started fresh—a puzzling decision considering they could have simply renamed their existing accounts.

In Ananta, you play as an Infinite Trigger, a supernatural investigator tackling paranormal events. The game features characters such as Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila.
