Pokémon TCG Launch Faces Scalping, Shortages, and Outages Again

by Isabella May 02,2025

The latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) set, Scarlet & Violet - Destined Rivals, was fully unveiled on March 24 and is set to launch on May 30, 2025. As with many highly anticipated releases, the pre-order phase has been tumultuous, with scalpers and website issues complicating the process for fans eager to get their hands on the new cards.

Destined Rivals stands out for a few reasons that make it particularly coveted. One significant draw is the return of Trainer's Pokémon cards, reminiscent of classics like Brock's Sandslash and Rocket's Mewtwo. These cards are a nostalgic nod to fans and a creative way to integrate beloved Trainers into the gameplay. Additionally, the set revolves around Team Rocket, a fan-favorite antagonistic group from the first generation of Pokémon, further boosting its appeal. Much like the Prismatic Evolutions set earlier this year, which celebrated Eevee's evolutions, Destined Rivals is poised to be a fan-favorite.

When pre-orders opened, fans encountered numerous challenges accessing the Pokémon Center website to purchase the Elite Trainer Box (ETB), a popular starter pack for collectors and players. Frustration mounted as many were unable to secure their orders.

Scalpers quickly capitalized on the situation, listing the ETBs on platforms like eBay at exorbitant prices, with some listings reaching several hundred dollars for a box that typically retails at $54.99. Joe Merrick from Serebii expressed his dismay over the situation on social media, highlighting the shift of the Pokémon TCG from a hobby to a financial investment and the rampant flipping of products.

This issue is not unique to Destined Rivals. Previous sets like Prismatic Evolutions and Blooming Waters 151 also faced similar shortages and quick sell-outs. The Pokémon Company has acknowledged the issue, stating that more inventory of the Destined Rivals ETB will be available later in the year, according to PokéBeach.

Adding to the frustration, some fans reported that their pre-orders were being cancelled. The high demand and popularity of the Pokémon TCG are evident, but these issues are overshadowing the joy of the hobby for many who simply want to enjoy opening packs and playing the game.

While Pokémon TCG Pocket offers a digital alternative, the physical card collecting community continues to face challenges with scarcity. Visiting your local store's card aisle might reveal the difficulty in finding available packs. These exciting releases are marred by the current market dynamics, leaving fans hopeful for solutions to these persistent problems.
