The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, and is expected to be a sought-after item upon release. To manage demand and prioritize dedicated fans, Nintendo has introduced a pre-order system through the My Nintendo Store that ensures genuine Switch players have the best chance to secure their console and select accessories.
On the My Nintendo Store, individuals with a Nintendo Account can express their interest in pre-ordering a Nintendo Switch 2 system and related accessories. Those who register will receive an invitation email when it's their turn to pre-order, which will be valid for 72 hours. However, there's a catch: to be eligible, you must have played on your current Switch and be a member of Nintendo Switch Online.
"Invitation emails will be prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis to registrants who have purchased a Nintendo Switch Online membership with a minimum of 12 months of paid membership and a minimum of 50 total gameplay hours, as of April 2, 2025," states the site's fine print. Additionally, these invitations are "non-transferable" and will be sent to the email associated with the registering Nintendo Account. There's also a one-per-account limit for both the system and each accessory during the invitation period. You can choose between a base Nintendo Switch 2 system or one bundled with Mario Kart World.
Once ordered, the Switch 2 will be shipped post-purchase, with an approximate shipping date provided at the time of ordering. Nintendo emphasizes that release-day delivery is not guaranteed due to processing and shipment times.
Although not explicitly stated by Nintendo, these measures seem designed to ensure that the Switch 2 is purchased by individuals who intend to use it themselves, rather than reselling it for profit online. This approach is a response to the frequent issue of scalping, which has affected products like the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
Valve successfully implemented a similar queue system for the Steam Deck, which linked purchases to Steam accounts and checked account creation dates. This method appears to have inspired Nintendo's strategy with the My Nintendo Store.
While there will be other avenues to acquire a Nintendo Switch 2, this system offers long-time Switch owners a chance to avoid the potential frenzy surrounding launch day pre-orders.
