Hori's Piranha Plant camera for the Nintendo Switch 2 offers a resolution of just 480p, which is notably lower than the 1080p resolution provided by Nintendo's official Switch 2 camera. The UK My Nintendo Store has confirmed these specifications:
- Nintendo Switch 2 Camera: Video capture quality at 1080p.
- Piranha Plant Camera for Nintendo Switch 2: Camera resolution at 640 × 480.

Despite its lower resolution, Hori's Piranha Plant camera, which is officially licensed by Nintendo, is more affordable than Nintendo's own camera priced at $49.99. It's important to note that you can use either the Nintendo Switch 2 camera accessory or any compatible USB-C camera with the Switch 2. Both cameras are set to launch alongside the Switch 2 on June 5.
The Piranha Plant camera comes with a unique feature: the part of the Piranha that contains the webcam can detach from the pot, allowing you to place it directly on top of the Switch 2. This enhances its portability, a feature lacking in Nintendo's camera. Additionally, you can close the plant's mouth to cover the lens.
Nintendo fans were taken aback by the news of the Piranha Plant camera's low resolution. "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025?" questioned redditor Ramen536Pie. "That must be harder to do than a 1080p camera."
"That's actually hilarious," remarked LizardsoftheGhost. "Maybe they meant to release this back when the Wii U came out."
"Isn't 480p a crime nowadays?" added pokemonfitness1420.
During last week's Nintendo Direct, Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2's GameChat functionality, which is activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con.
This feature allows players to watch each other playing the same or different games and, with a camera, even see each other. The built-in microphone is noted for its reliability across various gaming environments. The C button's chat menu aims to be an all-in-one multiplayer feature, potentially marking Nintendo's most significant online push in decades.
