As the creative minds behind *A Minecraft Movie* sat down with IGN, they let slip a delightful tidbit about one of the film's standout comedic moments—a scene inspired by none other than *The NeverEnding Story*. When Jack Black’s Steve finds himself hitching a ride on Jason Momoa’s Garrett due to a shortage of Elytra wings, what ensues is a riotous display of physical comedy. Little did viewers know, this wasn’t just slapstick humor but a nod to the iconic Falkor scene from the beloved fantasy classic.
Director Jared Hess admitted their intention was to capture the majesty and beauty of Falkor’s flight while introducing an element of chaos. Meanwhile, producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson couldn’t help but chuckle over the hilarity during breaks between takes. “Jack is sitting on top of Jason,” he recalled, “and they’re in this complicated rig… Jack starts singing, because he does that in between scenes, but he starts singing the words to *The NeverEnding Story* and riding him like he’s riding Falkor.”
Ironically, Jack Black’s affinity for the franchise runs deeper—he portrayed Slip in *The NeverEnding Story 3*. For Momoa, bringing this vision to life was a highlight. “I got to participate in writing that, and this big guy [Jack Black] wanted to do it too,” he shared with a laugh. “This was after *Top Gun: Maverick* came out, so I also wanted to be able to go into it and then hit the brakes and then have them slide down and I switcheroo on them. We were sitting there at the hotel dying about this idea of Jack and I doing this stunt, and it made it [into the movie] and it’s phenomenal.”
Black quipped, “I don’t know if it made it in the final cut because there were different versions of that scene, but it could have gone hard rated R.” He added, “In the end, I think we made it family-friendly!”
