Minecraft Movie Surpasses Super Mario Bros. with Record Video Game Film Debut

by Jack Apr 27,2025

The Minecraft Movie has soared to new heights at the box office, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie to claim the title of the biggest domestic debut ever for a video game adaptation. Starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, with the latter also featured in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this Xbox game adaptation raked in an impressive $157 million in North American theaters alone. In comparison, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which still holds the record as the highest-grossing video game adaptation, opened with $146 million domestically back in April 2023.

Globally, A Minecraft Movie added $144 million from international markets, culminating in a staggering worldwide opening weekend total of $301 million. With a production budget of $150 million, not including global marketing expenses, the film is poised to be a profitable venture for Warner Bros.

Based on Mojang's Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time, A Minecraft Movie taps into the enduring popularity of the Microsoft-owned sandbox game. To further leverage the film's release, Minecraft has introduced movie tie-in DLC.

IGN gave A Minecraft Movie a 6/10 rating, praising director Jared Hess for infusing the kid-friendly adventure with a unique and humorous comic touch, particularly in the first half of the film. If you've seen the movie, don't miss IGN's detailed explanation of A Minecraft Movie's ending and post-credits scene, featuring insights from director Jared Hess and Minecraft's Torfi Frans Ólafsson.

In other news, Disney's live-action Snow White is facing challenges at the box office, having earned $168.4 million globally ($77.5 million domestic and $90.9 million international). With a hefty production budget of $250 million, it's uncertain whether it can achieve a comeback similar to Mufasa: The Lion King.
