Minecraft Creator Hints at a Spiritual Successor: Minecraft 2?
Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has ignited excitement among fans by strongly suggesting a potential "Minecraft 2." While not a direct sequel due to IP rights held by Microsoft, Notch's recent social media activity points towards a new game heavily inspired by his iconic creation.
On January 1st, Notch posted a poll on X (formerly Twitter) outlining his current project: a blend of traditional roguelike and tile-based first-person dungeon crawler elements. However, he added a significant option: a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft. Overwhelmingly, the Minecraft-inspired option won, garnering 81.5% of nearly 300,000 votes.
In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed his seriousness, stating he had essentially announced Minecraft 2. He acknowledged the immense popularity of the original and expressed his enthusiasm for revisiting his creative passion. He emphasized that while he's open to developing either game first, he's committed to creating something new. He also clarified his intent to avoid infringing on Mojang Studios' and Microsoft's current work on the Minecraft franchise, expressing respect for their continued efforts.
Notch also voiced concerns about the challenges of creating a spiritual successor, acknowledging the risks involved. Despite these concerns, he's leaning towards the project that fans clearly desire, particularly given the potential financial success.
While fans eagerly await this potential "Minecraft 2," they can also look forward to other Minecraft experiences in the coming years, including themed amusement parks slated for the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, and a live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," set for release later in 2025.
