Basic Information

Elytra is a unique and sought-after item in Minecraft that grants players the ability to glide. This feature significantly speeds up exploration, particularly when paired with fireworks for an extra boost. When folded, Elytra resembles a cloak, but when equipped, it transforms into majestic wings. However, Elytra can only be found naturally in the End dimension, specifically within Ships near End Cities. Below, we'll explore different methods to obtain them across various game modes.

How to Get Elytra in Minecraft in Survival Mode

Preparing for Battle

Before setting out on your quest to obtain Elytra, thorough preparation is essential. You'll need to equip yourself with Diamond or Netherite armor, preferably enchanted for maximum protection. Arm yourself with an enchanted sword and bow—consider enchantments like Infinity for your bow to maintain a steady supply of arrows. Stock up on arrows or a crossbow with fireworks for effective long-range attacks. Potions such as regeneration, strength, and slow falling will be invaluable for healing, boosting damage, and surviving falls. Don't forget to carry golden apples for emergency healing and blocks to reach the End Crystals. To avoid provoking Endermen, wear a carved pumpkin on your head.

Activating the Portal to the End

To access the End dimension, you'll need 12 Eye of Ender. These are crucial not only for activating the portal but also for locating the Stronghold. Crafting an Eye of Ender requires Blaze Powder, which comes from Blaze Rods dropped by Blaze mobs in Nether Fortresses, and Ender Pearls, dropped by Endermen. Blaze Powder is more accessible since Blazes spawn exclusively in Nether Fortresses, while obtaining enough Ender Pearls might require luck or setting up an automatic farm. Once you have the materials, craft the Eye of Ender using the following recipe:

Finding the Stronghold

With your Eye of Ender in hand, you can now locate the Stronghold. Activate the Eye by placing it in your hand and pressing the action button; it will fly towards the Stronghold's location. Follow its trajectory and dig down when it indicates you're close. Inside the Stronghold, navigate through its dark corridors filled with hostile mobs like skeletons and creepers, searching for the room with the End Portal. Once found, insert the Eye of Ender into the portal frame to activate it, then step through to enter the End dimension.

Battle with the Dragon

Upon arriving in the End, you'll face the Ender Dragon immediately. Your first priority should be to destroy the End Crystals that regenerate the dragon's health. Use your bow to shoot them from a distance or reach them manually if necessary. Once the crystals are destroyed, focus on damaging the dragon, using your bow when it's airborne and your sword when it lands on the portal. After defeating the dragon, a portal to the End Gateway will appear. Throw an Ender Pearl into it to teleport to the outer islands, where you'll find End Cities and, potentially, an End Ship containing the Elytra.

Inside the Ship

In the End Ship, look for an Item Frame on the wall, which holds the Elytra. Break the frame to claim the wings, and don't forget to loot any chests for additional rewards. Be wary of Shulkers, which guard the ship and can be dealt with using arrows or a sword.

Creative Mode

For those who prefer a less challenging approach, obtaining Elytra in Creative Mode is straightforward. Simply open your inventory, search for "Elytra," and drag it into your inventory. While this method is easier and safer, it doesn't provide the same sense of achievement as earning it in Survival Mode.

Commands

If neither of the above methods appeals to you, and you have cheats enabled, you can use commands to instantly obtain Elytra. Open the chat by pressing "T" and enter the following command:

/give @s minecraft:elytra

This will add Elytra to your inventory, allowing you to skip the challenges of obtaining it through gameplay.

How to Fly with Elytra

To use Elytra, equip them in the chest armor slot of your inventory. Then, climb to a high point, jump off, and press the Spacebar to start gliding. Mastering Elytra flight can transform your Minecraft experience, allowing you to explore vast distances and perform aerial stunts.
