Lost Soul Aside's Steam Release Frustrates Gamers Due to Sony's Region Lock
UltiZero Games' highly anticipated action RPG, Lost Soul Aside, will be unavailable in over 130 countries on Steam due to region restrictions imposed by Sony. This decision has sparked significant backlash from PC gamers.
A PSN-Related Restriction, Despite No PSN Requirement
The region lock, according to SteamDB, affects countries unsupported by the PlayStation Network (PSN). Ironically, Lost Soul Aside doesn't require a PSN account to play. However, the game's presence on Steam is contingent upon PSN support in a given region, forcing players in affected areas to create alternate Steam accounts in eligible countries. This has led to widespread frustration, with many gamers expressing their anger on social media and forums, and choosing not to purchase the game. This is particularly perplexing given PlayStation's recent removal of PSN requirements for its PC titles.
A Blend of Fantasy and Realism
Since its initial reveal in 2016, Lost Soul Aside has captivated audiences with its unique blend of fantasy elements and realistic visuals. In interviews with IGN and Famitsu (February 20, 2025), UltiZero Games CEO Yang Bing discussed the game's artistic direction and influences.
The game's style, including its high-speed, flashy combat, has remained consistent since its first trailer. Bing credits influences from titles like Final Fantasy XV, evident in the protagonist Kaser's design—a fusion of cartoonish features and realistic textures.
Gameplay Inspired by Gaming Giants
Lost Soul Aside's combat system draws inspiration from action gaming titans like Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden, and Devil May Cry. Bing highlighted the fast-paced action and flashy abilities, emphasizing the game's adaptable combat system allowing players to develop their own unique fighting styles.
Lost Soul Aside launches May 30, 2025, on PlayStation 5 and PC. The region lock, however, casts a significant shadow over its PC release, leaving a large portion of potential players unable to easily access the game.
