Gunn, Cena Surprised by HBO Max Rebrand

by Lucas May 25,2025

James Gunn and the team behind Peacemaker were in for a surprise while filming promotional content for Season 2. Warner Bros. Discovery announced that it would revert its streaming service back to the HBO Max name, and the reactions from Gunn and others were captured on camera, adding a humorous twist to the announcement.

The decision to revert from Max to HBO Max, announced earlier today, has left many scratching their heads, including some of the biggest names at DC Studios. The official X account of the soon-to-be-renamed Max shared the priceless reactions of Gunn and Peacemaker star John Cena as they learned about the change during a promotional shoot.

Gunn was visibly taken aback when the script he was reading referred to HBO Max instead of Max. He humorously questioned the change, saying, "God, we’re calling it HBO Max – what? We’re calling it HBO Max again?" Other crew members, including DC Studios Co-CEO Peter Safran, also chimed in, adding to the confusion and hilarity of the moment. Gunn expressed a positive reaction to the news, stating, "That’s good, actually, but I didn’t know that was happening."

In contrast, John Cena seemed well-informed about the rebrand. His video showed him breaking the news to the crew, adding another layer of entertainment to the situation. These reactions could be part of an elaborate publicity stunt by the HBO Max team, but they certainly provided a funny glimpse into the reactions of key DC Studios figures.

HBO Max initially launched in 2020 as a comprehensive streaming platform. It retained its name until 2023 when Warner Bros. Discovery, following a merger, decided to simplify the name to Max. Now, after two years of adjustment, the company has decided to bring back the HBO Max branding, which it now considers a better fit.

No specific date has been set for the rebrand's implementation. As fans await further updates on both HBO Max and Peacemaker Season 2, they can explore other notable DC projects slated for 2025 and delve into the latest trailer insights for Peacemaker Season 2.
