Rockstar has postponed Grand Theft Auto VI's release to May 26, 2026, moving it from its original fall 2025 window.
In an official statement, Rockstar expressed regret over the substantial delay for what's anticipated to be the most ambitious entertainment launch in history.
"We deeply regret this timeline adjustment," Rockstar acknowledged. "The overwhelming enthusiasm for a new Grand Theft Auto installment has been incredibly moving for our team. We're grateful for your continued support and understanding as we finalize development.
"With every release, we strive to surpass player expectations—Grand Theft Auto VI will be no different. This additional development time ensures we meet the quality standards our audience deserves.
"We'll be sharing more updates shortly."
While Rockstar's announcement confirms GTA VI's launch date, the absence of new footage means fans must wait longer for Trailer 2. Platform details remain unspecified, fueling speculation about a simultaneous PC release alongside PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions.
"Release timelines always carry inherent risks," noted Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick during a February interview with IGN regarding confidence in the initial 2025 target. "Absolute guarantees often invite complications—though we remained optimistic."
In a May 2 investor briefing, Zelnick endorsed Rockstar's decision to postpone GTA VI into Take-Two's 2027 fiscal year.
"We fully back Rockstar's choice to extend development, ensuring Grand Theft Auto VI delivers revolutionary experiences that redefine industry standards.
"While we recognize the global anticipation surrounding this title, our commitment to quality remains paramount. This strategic decision aligns with our long-term growth objectives and shareholder value creation."
The revised schedule creates opportunities for other major 2025 releases—including Borderlands 4, Battlefield, Marathon, and Ghost of Yotei—to gain greater market traction. Nintendo's Switch 2 launch also stands to benefit from reduced competition.
Developers who accelerated projects to precede GTA VI's original launch window face strategic complications. Similarly, titles targeting May 2026 will require careful reevaluation.
