Garena Free City, the latest addition to the developer's extensive lineup, is now open for pre-registration on both iOS and Android devices across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. If you've been eagerly awaiting the next installment in a certain iconic series, Garena Free City might just be the perfect interim entertainment.
Let's be clear: Garena Free City is Garena's interpretation of Grand Theft Auto, slated for release on June 30th. Whether this is a welcome development or not hinges on your personal taste. At first glance, it might seem like just another mobile clone of GTA, but a closer look reveals some intriguing possibilities.
For starters, the game boasts a comprehensive character customization system, reminiscent of The Sims, allowing for detailed manipulation of individual features. Unlike the realistic style of GTA, Garena Free City introduces more fantastical elements, including giant robots and summonable power-ups like deployable cover.
Bold & BrashYet, it's evident that the game is also trying to replicate the allure of Grand Theft Auto Online, which is a missed opportunity. The unique, more unconventional features are what truly capture attention and could set Free City apart.
However, the timing of Garena Free City's launch might not be ideal. While I don't believe in the concept of a 'killer app' within a single genre on mobile, the upcoming release of Ananta, which promises a vast open world and quirky side quests similar to Free City but on a larger scale, poses stiff competition. Ananta's distinct anime aesthetic might deter some players, but it's this very uniqueness that Free City seems to lack, and it's my primary critique so far.
