FFXIV Mobile Rumors: Truth or Fiction?

Rumors are swirling that the popular MMORPG, FFXIV, might be making its way to mobile devices. A gaming industry source, Kurakasis, suggests Tencent Games and Square Enix are collaborating on a mobile port.

A Spotty Mobile History

While this isn't Square Enix's first foray into mobile Final Fantasy games, past attempts have had mixed results. Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, while decent, didn't quite hit the mark for many players, and Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia was shut down in 2023. Adapting a complex MMORPG like FFXIV for mobile presents a significant challenge.

Unverified, But Not Impossible

It's crucial to remember this is unconfirmed. Square Enix hasn't officially commented. However, past collaborations between Square Enix and Tencent hint at the possibility. Discussions about joint projects occurred in 2018 and 2021, making the rumor not entirely unfounded.

The leak from Kurakasis provides no timeframe, leaving the project's status uncertain. A formal announcement remains pending.

The Big Question: Can it Work?

Successfully porting FFXIV's intricate mechanics to a mobile platform without compromising its depth is a considerable hurdle. A simplified, less engaging version could easily disappoint dedicated fans. Only time will tell if Square Enix can successfully navigate this challenge.
